Ionuț Cofaru

Ionuţ Cofaru graduated from the Faculty of Law in 2014 and has been a member of the Bucharest Bar since 2014. In his time as a student, Ionut has participated in numerous competitions, the most renowned of them being The Philip C. Jessup competition.

Ionuţ joined our team in October 2014 and his activity mainly concerns the litigation area in intellectual property matters, while also having a deep understanding of contract law problems. Given his extensive practice in the intellectual property field, Ionut also became a Trademark attorney in May 2023.

Ionuţ is also coordinating seminars of Civil Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Bucharest.

Further on, since 2021, Ionut has participated as a National Expert (Romania) in the project: Collection of National Key Enforcement Judgments related to Intellectual Property Rights, commissioned by the European Union Intellectual Property Office.

The most significant projects in which Ionuţ has been involved include:

• assisting a Swiss pharmaceuticals manufacturer in a series of court cases aimed at enforcing its patent portfolio covering some of its highest selling products;
• advising a major generic pharmaceutical manufacturer in pre-litigation preparations;
• assisting a biopesticides manufacturer in prosecution proceedings concerning its supplementary protection certificate;
• representing an international tobacco company in litigation against one of its competitors for the enforcement of some of its European Patents, both in PI and main proceedings;
• advising one of the global leaders in the tobacco sector in patent validity matters;
• advising a top European automotive parts manufacturer on its defence strategy against infringement allegations grounded on a European Patent covering a lighting system for automotives;
• representing an international player from the oil sector in patent cancellation proceedings directed against its patent covering a process for producing diesel fuel in front of all relevant Romanian Courts, including the Supreme Court of Justice;
• assisting a major oil company in multiple patent and trade mark related litigations;
• advising a major international player from the energy sector in litigation concerning damages resulting from an alleged unlawful use of several patented solutions;
• advising a major international German player from the automotive industry with respect to Romanian laws on employee’s inventions;
• providing assistance to one of the most renowned mineral water distributors in Romania in court cases concerning alleged trademark/ design and copyright infringement;
• advising and representing a Romanian airline in matters related to competition law;
• providing assistance to one of the most reputed food and beverage manufacturers in Romania in trade mark related cases in front of EUIPO, European Court of Justice and national courts;
• representing a confectionery manufacturer in trade mark related cases in front of the national courts;
• advising and representing a Romanian airline in matters related to unfair competition law;
• advising one of the most renowned watches retailer in Romania in trade mark protection matters.
